Saturday was a busy day... I started the morning over in Lough Boora, Co. Offaly, photographing models among the beautiful boglands, before rushing across the country (while keeping to the speed limits, of course!) to make it to the Clasaċ Theatre in Clontarf just in time for the Irish Burlesque Awards.
I pulled into the car park, unpacked my gear, said my hellos, and got myself set up in the theatre. Just as I was finally sitting down to take a breather, someone shouted that there was smoke...
At first, I thought it might be dry ice, but then again, dry ice doesn't usually come from the seating area, does it? Moments later, the fire alarm was activated, and the building was evacuated.
Now, you're probably thinking that put an end to the fun and frolics. In most situations, you'd probably be right. But burlesque performers are nothing if not adaptable!
So, while the theatre staff dealt with the fire, the party continued outside. I think we all knew the show wasn't going to go ahead, what with fire safety and health and safety regulations, but it was a beautiful summer's night, people were in no rush to head home, drinks were served, and the performers did what they do best — they put on a show!
Due to a family bereavement, this was my first burlesque or cabaret show in over seven weeks. My heart has been heavy — and, well, it still is — but the fun and frolics of the evening, and the sheer resilience of the Irish Burlesque Awards team and the performers, turning what could have been an absolute disaster into a night of fun and laughter, lifted my spirits more than I can put into words. It really was, as the saying goes, just what the doctor ordered.
The Irish Burlesque Awards will return, hopefully without the smoke and fire, so keep an eye on their socials for details.
Now for a few photos of the madness!
