Paddy Casey - Whelan's, Dublin - December 28th, 2025

They’re singing “Deck the Halls, but it’s not like Christmas at all. ’Cause I remember when you were here, and all the fun we had last year…”

Not just last year...  I think I’ve been going to see Paddy Casey play Whelan’s at Christmas since 2018. It’s become one of those great Christmas nights out you just don’t miss.

Whelan’s was packed, and it was hot — hot and sweaty — just like all good gigs should be. Add to that a crowd of fervent fans, and you knew straight away it was going to be a good night.

Speaking of those fans — me included — they sang almost every word of every song, all night long. I know some folk hate that, but I love it. It gives a great sense of togetherness, and sure isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Being together with friends and family.

There’s something quite special about hearing songs like Saints and Sinners, Times Are Tough, The Lucky One, and others being sung back by the crowd in Whelan’s. It’d put you in a good mood.

As is the norm, mid-show the brilliant Saoirse Casey stepped out from behind the keyboards to treat us to a couple of her own songs. You really should go listen to her music — it’s all kinds of wonderful.

Support on the night came from singer, songwriter, musician, dancer, and actress Yasmina Cherelle. You should check her out before she hits the big time in one — if not all — of those fields. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest.

So, was it a good night? Absolutely.
Should you go next year? Absolutlier!

Anyway… I wasn’t there to shoot the gig — I was just there to enjoy the show — so I didn’t take that many photos, but I did grab some video.

Greatest goalkeeper never to play for Ireland at any level. A failed rock star. Now I take pretty pictures of Rock n' Roll, Burlesque and Political Activism.
