The last time I saw Alex Gough live was back in 2021, during COVID, when a friend gave me a free ticket to a socially distanced gig. I’d no idea what to expect, but it was a gig — a night out — and that was all that mattered. It turned out to be a great night.
That was nearly five years ago, and somehow our paths didn’t cross again until earlier this month.
So I packed my bags and headed off to Dublin — The Grand Social, to be exact — fully convinced it was going to be a good night.
Since I last caught Alex live, he’s released his debut album Painful, so this was my first chance to hear any of it in person. So I guess the question is: was it any good?
Of course it was.
If you get the chance to check him out over festival season, you should definitely go.
Support came from Saoirse Miller, a new name to me, so again I’d no idea what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. At times, she reminded me of Sinéad O’Connor in The Lion and the Cobra days—the haunting lyrics, switching between Irish and English with ease.
